  1. Disappointed by the current state-of-the-art in handwriting 
  2. recognition (HWR) ? 
  3. Have you ever wished for a high-accuracy HWR system that would
  4. enable  a host of ╥intelligent╙ devices, including phones,
  5. portables,  PDAs, portable wireless communication devices,
  6. etc.? Well, here is your chance to contribute towards the
  7. development of the best high-accuracy HWR system of the 
  8. future!

  10. All it takes is a Newton MessagePad, the Connection Kit, and
  11. about one hour of your time! Do it today; see the results in 
  12. the next generation of HWR devices!

  14. Type Solutions, Inc. announces the availability of our 
  15. digital handwriting sample collector. We have been working
  16. on the next generation of handwriting recognition technology
  17. since 1993. We have overcome many hurdles along the
  18. way to high-accuracy recognition of "natural" writing and 
  19. a few hurdles remain. One of these hurdles isthe gathering 
  20. of a significant sized database of writing samples. 
  21.  
  22. Clearly, the ability of a computer-trained system to 
  23. recognize handwriting can be no better than the database
  24. of examples available for training that system. It is in
  25. this area that we are turning to you, the current base of
  26. Newton users, for assistance. Whether the Newton's built-in
  27. recognizer works very well for you, or whether you find it
  28. next to unusable, we would like to have you submit a sample
  29. of your handwriting for our growing database of handwriting
  30. examples.

  32. Quite simply, the quality of our recognition seems to be
  33. bound by two factors, the underlying architecture, which we
  34. are working constantly to improve, and the size of the
  35. database available for training and evaluation of the system.
  36. Very high-accuracy can be obtained, but we need your help!

  38. Total time required should be approximately one hour; 
  39. Equipment and software required are a Newton device, the
  40. Newton Connection Kit 2.0, and our software (available from
  41. ftp://newton.uiowa.edu/submissions/NewtCollector1.1.sit (Mac)
  42. ftp://newton.uiowa.edu/submissions/NewtCollector1.1.zip (PC)
  43. It is also available on AOL (keyword PDA), and soon will be
  44. available on other major on-line services)

  46. A PCMCIA RAM card is desirable, but not strictly necessary.
  47. Complete instructions are included within a help-book in
  48. our application. A separate app serves to "clean up" the
  49. soups and directory entries inserted by our collector app.
  50. Thus, when you are done, run the clean-up app, and your
  51. Newton will have no soups leftover or other RAM consumers
  52. from our applications.

  63. non-fatal bug which caused an error -48024 to appear. 
  64. Version 1.1 fixes this problem.
